Assignment Bank 2: Filming:- Film Trailer Analysis

The typical codes and convections of a film trailer are: key moment (normally not placed in the same order of film), title of film and release date is usually shown at the end of the trailer, the soundtrack/music in the background suggests the genre and style of the film (also used to make the trailer more exiting and it is also used to persuade the audience). The trailer does not include the director’s name as well as the names of the main stars.
The target audience for this trailer is everyone. However the main target audience for this trailer could be action and adventure lovers as it uses many scenes which include battles, special effects, etc. This could persuade the audience to watch the movie more than the film poster. The trailer also shows the main star who are in the film. As some are not so famous, the audience would start thinking whether the film is good or not. Has the star done a great job? The audience gets all the important information such as the release date in a trailer. The narrator’s voice is not over used. Many dialogues in the trailer are from the movie scene, so there isn’t much narration. However the dialogues from the movie actually give a hint on what going on.
The genre of the film is shown through characters, the setting, music and the shots. The different camera shots/angles they have taken are: high angle, close-up, extreme long shot & mid-shot. The shots/angle makes the trailer seem tenser. It makes the audience interested. The music is also suitable for action movies and the setting is a battlefield. The effects in the trailer are also attracting. For example you have a burning coliseum, a palace floating in the air and the creatures (big and flying monsters).
The poster has information which can give the audience a hint of the movie synopsis; however the trailer is far much better than the poster because it contains scenes from the movie including music and narration. You can gain more information about the movie from the trailer than the poster. The audience decides to watch the movie mostly after watching the trailer because it makes the film more desirable to watch. Mostly to the people who love action movies.
The advantage of using an internet trailer to promote the film rather than a poster campaign is that an internet trailer is international. It can reach people all over the world. It’s just like sending the trailer to people’s fingertips internationally, whereas a poster is located in some areas and not everybody is going to pass it or even if they pass it they would not really notice it. These days many people use the internet to look out for new film. They sometimes are sent through social websites such as twitter, facebook or messenger. So an internet trailer is very beneficial to the film company.

Assignment Bank 2: Filming:- Film Poster Analysis

The typical codes and convections of the movie poster are: Title of film – Written in bold so it stands out the poster. Credits – Includes the names of the stars, the director’s name and the music track used in the film. The Production blurb - logo of the distributor. Image - This is the image of the movie. It is related to the main stars and it also gives an idea of the film genre. Tagline - Slogan for the movie, also telling the audience that the movie would be shown in 3D. Has the official website of the movie below the poster.
The genre of this film is action. You can figure this out by look at the facial expressions of the stars and the setting on the poster. You could see that they are going on battle as the main actor has a sword in his hand. The other genres of this film are adventure and fantasy. You can figure this out by the horse that has wings and the person who is wrapped up as a mummy.
The postures of the characters on the poster are very tense and serious. They are shown running and their facial expression is very serious. The setting on the poster shows us destruction and battle. By this the audience can figure out that the characters in the movie are warriors.
The title also gives a hint of the genre of the movie. The word ‘Clash’ in the title means conflict between the ‘Titans’ who are people from the old ages e.g. Greek Gods.  There would be a fight in the movie between humans and titans. The font of the title is bold, which makes the title stand out on the poster. It makes it interesting as the title fits in with the image and the setting on the poster. Audiences who love action and adventure would definitely expect something magnificent in the movie and as the movie is in 3D it would make it more exciting.
I believe that action lovers would be interested in watching this movie.  However individuals who are interested in Greek history would also love to watch this movie and some people might watch it as the distributor is Warner Bros. It has many unique selling points. The themes of the film are exciting. The background and special effects also make a great impression. The main actor (Sam Worthington) is not a well known actor. The audience would wonder how the film might be and would it be worth watching. The only thing that is intertexual is that the movie is a re-make of an old film which was also called ‘Clash of the Titans’ made in 1981.
Warner Bros. Pictures is the film company that produced the film. It is a well known producer and has produced many blockbuster movies for example ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’. This company would have spent a lot to advertise this movie. They would have advertised the movie poster on billboards, magazines, bus stops, buses and television.
