Assignment Bank 3: Print:- Survey Results.

My first question was very simple. This question would help me know how many people buy magazines. The number of people answered the survey are only nine but it can be useful as 7 out of 9 do buy magazines, from which I can estimate that if 90 people done my survey, 70 people do buy magazines.

People mostly chose fashion magazine as that is the most famous one in women society. As this question allowed you to choose many answers, some chose lifestyle and 1 chose health. Others preferred gossip. This tells me that I make my magazine; it should be a fashion magazine.

Many magazines are listed in this question. Most people buy OK, NOW, Heat and etc. So while planning my magazine, I would keep in mind how these magazine are set out and how they can help me while designing my front pages and content.
Like all the other people, everyone wants a celebrity on the front cover as she is known by everybody. Just one person preferred a normal model.

The content page is the most important page of the magazine as it tells you all the important information. Many people are very precise with this page as they want clear text and clear information on what topic is on what page.
From this question, I know that the magazine I would design needs to be brightly coloured and should include many pictures. This would really help me.

Analysing the two page spread
The two page article in my magazine is about Diane Kruger. The InStyle magazine is taking an interview of her. The way the interview wrote the account of the interview seems that she is directly telling us. I felt like she is writing a letter to the reader telling all her experiences with Diane Kruger. The language is quite friendly and jolly. There are many font changes made when writing the article, such as: font size and italicize the text.
The type of colours used to layout the two page spreads are quite posh and elegant. The colours black, white and golden are more dominant and they stand out. As Kruger is said to be a ‘Golden Girl’, she is mostly dressed in gold. The style of text used looks like Time New Roman and Arial. The text supports the image.
The two page spread is laid out satisfactorily. Diane Kruger’s picture takes up three-quarters of the page, making the text size quite small. Small fonts would make it harder for some people to read as they can be long-sighted. The editor could have made Kruger’s picture a bit smaller and the text a little larger. Maybe take one page for the picture and the other for the text. Altogether the page looks quite good. Next to image of Kruger, the magazine has written what dress she is wearing, the cost of it and who the designer is.
The sort of the tone the magazine has used to address the reader as I said above are quite friendly and jolly. They are writing like they are our close friend. Something like when a friend is introducing someone to us. This would make the reader want to read on and it makes it interesting. The article does not demand any prior knowledge to read the article. It is laid out finely and the text is easy to read. The editor did not even add to much text or any hard words that would confuse the reader. The sentences are perfectly laid out. Overall the page is set out nicely.

Analysing the contents page
When you open the magazine In Style, you see that there are many pages advertising products. There is a page where they tell us who the editors and photographers are. Finally the contents page comes. The first contents page include Diane Kruger’s photo. She is called ‘Golden Girl’ by the text written next to her.  The page includes the title of the magazine written in the same style. Right at the bottom of the page, there is an In Style offer. In the left side of the page, the editor has written of the person who took Kruger’s photo, what dress she is wearing and the price of it and who has made the jet gown.
It again tells us that it is their 10th birthday. Then it tells us what pages include each puff for example from page 47-91 they would talk about ‘169 GLAM BUYS’. At the bottom of that it starts going into detail by telling us what is on each page. However it is only a 40 page edit of the high street special.
At the bottom of the page there is a special ‘InStyle offer’. Customers can get 6 issues just for £6. The offer is quite good as each magazine costs £3.70. The title of the magazine, the volume and the date is also included. The main focus of the page is Diane Kruger.
The second content page comes after an advertisement. This page includes many images and text. Like the first one it tells us the rest of the topic in the magazine and at the end they have the offers and competition column. The images include Gemma (A British actress), few models to show the party picture and accessories. At the bottom is also includes the small image of the front cover and information next to it about who photographed her and who edited it, etc. They also have told customers their blog.
This page does not include the magazines name, however the small image of the front cover does. The images have their page number next to them, so it will help the customer to find the main topic of this magazine easily. They also include a little phrase to support the picture. The content pages tell us how much information there is stored in the magazine.

Analysing a magazine cover

The name of the magazine I am analysing is ‘In Style’. From the front cover, I know that this magazine would be about fashion (clothes, hair styles and make-up). It will include articles about celebrities wearing unique clothing’s and it will talk about the latest fashion. The target audiences for this magazine are people who really interested in fashion. People who want to keep up-to-date with the fashion world. These types of magazine are directed to teenagers and adults (female).
The central image is of Diane Kruger dressed up in a glittery and shiny dress made of sequins. This grabs the reader’s attention as it really stands out. She is giving a direct mode of address. This tells us that she wants the attention of the reader. Diane Kruger is on the front cover of the magazine as she is a celebrity, so her fans would buy the magazine for that reason. She is the image which would grab everybody’s attention. Her dress makes her more attractive and makes her stand out.
The anchorage text says ‘Diane Kruger celebrates with In Style’. It tells us that Kruger celebrated the tenth birthday of the magazine In Style. This explains her dress made out of sequins. The title of the magazine is written big enough to bring attention to. It shares the same background as of Kruger’s dress. The title indicates that the magazine is about style. The image is supported by title. Kruger’s right arm goes through the titles ‘S’ for In Style.
The buzz word in this magazine is ‘10th Birthday Issue! The party starts here’. The reader might think that as it is the 10th birthday issue, there must be something exclusive in it. Buyers might even think that this magazine must be very good as it is going on for 10 years. The puffs on the cover suggest that there would be new fashion style, new high street styles and new hair styles. They would advertise products. So the type of audiences this magazine would get attention from is Fashion lovers and shoppers who like to be up to date with the latest products. The puff that is circled on the above picture tells us that that is the truth as they have said in brackets ‘(Yes, really). There is no certain slogan for the magazine. The colours used are quite posh, rich and simple for example white and gold. The strategies that the magazines use to attract the audience are:
·         Big Texts
·         A celebrity
·         Attracting colours
The price of the magazine is written in small next to the issue date. A website for the magazine is written on top of the title in small. There are no other images included on the front cover which suggest that only Diane Kruger is in the spotlight.
